Modern Concrete By The Ancient Roman Formula

An important achievement of Ancient Rome was the creation of concrete: a perfect combination of art and technology. By reinventing the old Roman formula and combining it with new technology, we are able to provide a key for building modern concrete spaces with a taste of tradition. We produce flexible concrete rolls for interior coating as well as concrete paste for floors and facades. This website contains an inspirational gallery of some of the best solutions in the world, which you can recreate with our inventions.

Concrete Neutra

Flexibilize Neutra

A COLLECTION INSPIRED BY LE CORBUSIER

Les styles sont un mensonges. Une Maison est une machine à habiter. “Styles are lies. A house is a machine for living” affirmed Le Corbusier in his famous volume Vers Une Architecture. That is where the Flexibilize Neutra Collection comes from. A collection composed of flexible rolls of exposed concrete applied with a spatula in uniform tones of grey. Thanks to the ruggedness of this modern Beton Brut, the capacity of its surface to reflect light in a natural way and the simplicity of the shapes to which it can adapt, Flexibilize Neutra generates beauty in a completely unselfconscious way. By wisely mixing our products you can create timeless environments where lightorder and space merge together to generate a perfection which is not antique, not modern, but simply eternal.

Flexibilize Shadow

LUIS KAHN AND THE POWER OF SHADOW

Does shadow have the power to give form to architecture? To answer the question Flexibilize proposes the Shadow Collection where stains and discolors reproduce the natural aging of concrete delivering to the architect a three-dimensional canvas where he can freely play to give form to big and silent spaces. As  Louis Kahn claimed, in fact, the potential of light could only be revealed using shadow. The Tadao Ando’s Church of Light, the Peter Zumthor’s ThermeVals and the Carlo Scarpa’s Brion Cemetery are the most eloquent witnesses of this theory using shadow to evoke silence and awe, secret or drama. The action of weather and the signs of time give to the concrete a unique feeling of melancholic and mysterious beauty allowing the observer relive an entire century in once glance.

Flexibilize Iron

CONTEMPORARY METALS FOR INTERIOR DESIGN

Corten Steel was used to make the largest steel sculpture in Europe: La Liberté by Marino di Teana. The works of Marino impress for the unity of thought that they express. For him a work of art could not be done unless there was a philosophical world behind it: “It’s the activity of man who creates philosophy and it creates the work of art”. From this idea the Flexibilize Iron collection is born: flexible concrete sheets created by the natural oxidation of iron and obtained through artisanal processes to meet every technical and expressive need. It is possible to customize the rolls in a variety of ways, choosing between three types of natural oxidation: Rusty, Copper and Corten. The natural oxidation makes the material alive and its capacity to react to light in a natural manner makes the surface even more tridimensional. Designed for the lining of interior walls, the architect can play with the rolls: highlighting the seam; using inserts and nails to personalize each project. Moreover, Flexibilize Iron can be used to coat any kind of furnishing. Furniture, fireplaces, boiserie and finished products can be realized in harmony with the walls to build a modern Iron environment.

Flexibilize Color

THE PSYCHOLOGICAL EFFECTS OF COLOR IN ARCHITECTURE

The Latin root of the word color is colorem, which is in turn derived from the Greek kelainos: dark or obscure. Therefore, to color in antiquity was something to hide, to render obscure, to darken, to change. The color was a protection and a conserver of the surfaces. It was used to define the identity of spaces, differentiating on the basis of their function, but also to respond to perceptive needs as a whole. The chromatic variety of the walls, columns and floors of the Colosseum testified to this, allowing every individual, as much as possible, to find a chromatic “place” of sympathy. Colors can sustain the man but also hinder him by producing well-being or creating malaise in an enclosed space. Flexibilize Color offers every architect the possibility of choosing among the most trending colors in the field ofinterior design, to create color blended spaces where ergonomy, form and chromaticity sustain and harmonize with the nature of human activity. The spatulate can be used to create smooth monomaterial surfaces or rolls of more than 50 colors can be combined to obtain the most different surfaces. Colored boiserie or finished color products can be created to help decorate the room conferring personality to the walls and floors and coherence to the project.

Flexibilize Stone

A COLLECTION INSPIRED BY LAPIS TIBURTINUS: THE WHITE GOLD OF ROME

A selection of stones with natural texture and a warm color contribute to the creation of a unique and high-class environment. Thanks to its tri-dimensionality and its response to light, the lapis tiburtinus (also known as Travertine Marble) was used by the Romans to cover the facades of their most prestigious buildings such as the Colosseum and Saint Peter’s Church as well as 20th century edifices. Lasting over time, it demonstrated an amazing ability to adapt itself to the style of every age. Reinterpreting stone – one of the most popular and appreciated materials in the world – is the inspiration of our Flexibilize Stone Collection. Today, technology and innovation give us the possibility to offer this material in flexible rolls that can be used in any Interior Design project. Our stone is a joy to the eye and to the hand. Flexibilize Stone is the perfect balance between Classic and Modern Design.

Flexibilize Boardform

“NOTHING IS ART IF IT DOESN’T COME FROM NATURE” ANTONI GAUDÌ

“Wood seems firm, but is subjected to internal pressures that slowly breaks it. Ceramic breaks, immediately showing its broken pieces. Wood no, as long as it can conceal, it lets itself be tortured but it does not confess. I am made of wood”, Giulia Carcasi affirmed. This is the reason why the ancient Romans chose wood instead of the previous materials to build the formwork: not because it was readily available, simple to work and maneuver but because it was able to withstand the weight and pressure associated with a concrete cast and it was breathable, an important detail in the phase of concrete maturation. In the past wood was not smooth and its rough consistency left the recognizable web of veins on the surface of the concrete. Each type of wood, in fact, has a certain color, density and grain: the dark rings are the winter growth and the lighter rings are the summer growth. These aspects can be emphasized to give the concrete an interesting surface appearance, in order to leave it exposed. From this idea our Boardform collection was born: a collection that aims to recreate the atmosphere given by the rough concrete revisiting the Roman technique of the wooden formwork through a process of patterning concrete that leaves the grain of the wood (the negative designs of the fiber and the knots) on the finished face of the concrete wall. Using this technique we have developed different surface textures that you can use in your Interior Design projects to recreate a natural and modern environment.

Black and white mosaic is an exclusively Italian taste. Spas, markets, forums and temples as well as the private homes of Ancient Rome were rich in black and white mosaics, almost exclusively, by geometric patterns. Broken lines, triangles or circles, aligned in varying ways or intertwined, rhombuses or squares juxtaposed or repeated in a modular composition, were arranged in various kinds of patterns. Compared to its Greek predecessor, the Roman mosaic had its own recognizable style, also called Neo-Attic for its simplicity of form and the predominance of white and black. Although the wall and floor decorations of other cities of the empire were occasionally cited as examples of superior taste, in reality they copied Rome: the capital dictated taste, not the lesser cities.

Even today we rely on Rome’s outstanding taste to present a new collection that, reinterpreting the opus sectile in a hyper-modern key, offers the architect the possibility to transform an anonymous surface into an authentic style icon. A wide range of exclusive graphics contributes to create customized patterns that can be used individually or combined with other collections to turn homes into true landmarks of modern art. The beauty of the material, the extreme attention to detail, and a constant dialogue between the contemporary and codes linked to tradition, gives life to spaces and to innovative objects that are able to tell stories and induce emotions. This is precisely the aim of Flexibilize Design: to investigate the past to give life to a new hybrid future, putting culture, craftsmanship and territoriality at the service of the architect in a completely Italian way.

Flexibilize Textile

THE TEXTILE DESIGN: FROM MEDIEVAL TAPESTRIES TO THE ROLLS OF FLEXIBLE CONCRETE

Since the beginning of civilization, man has felt the need to adorn the walls of his house. We have moved from the curtains to  frescoes and wood cladding, stucco or leather to the tapestries.

Since the beginning of civilization, man has felt the need to adorn the walls of his house. We have moved from the curtains to frescoes and wood cladding, stucco or leather to tapestries.

Tapestries were particular carpets for walls that combined the decorative function with the purpose of thermal insulation. Their success was due to their easy transportability: being rollable they could be brought from one residence to another and saved in case of looting or fire. Fabrics have always played an important role in interior decoration and the techniques and materials have evolved over time as evidenced by the Bizzarre Design of Marot and Lehman, the Morris designed wallpaper and the subsequent developments of Textile Design. The most recent evolution of this art, halfway between craftsmanship and artistic representation, is our collection Flexibilize Textile. Our rolls are inspired by typical textile decorations which are then applied on embossed concrete. From traditional techniques are born 11 different models inspired by the trendy shapes of Modern Design. Inlays, engravings and light details create real law-reliefs: three-dimensional surfaces defined to explore with your hands as well as your eyes.
